Blue Falls murder:one arrested

Watauga County Detective Tucker said he already knows why a 29-year-old resident was murdered sometime in the dark hours of Tuesday morning but an ever-evolving investigation has persuaded him to keep it quiet for now.

“I know what happened. I know exactly what happened,” Tucker said Wednesday afternoon. "We aren’t releasing the motive, but we know why this happened.”

He said a confession from the suspect implicated in the murder of Samuel Frank Bowman contained information about the crime scene that has not been released to the media.

Because the investigation is still ongoing, Tucker wouldn’t reveal details.

Court documents quoted associates of Bowman as saying he’d planned an out of state trip.

Tucker said an autopsy should show whether Bowman was alive when he was pushed over a cliff. The murder investigation began just before three Tuesday afternoon when the report of a body found on Blue Falls Ranch. The cause and time of death remain undetermined until the report from a state medical examiner is released, most likely within the next week. They also got a search warrant for Bowman home.

A search of Bowman’s home turned up a number of clear plastic bags with a white powder inside. They also found a message on a dry-erase board reading “Mexico -- 10,000.”

Most of their leads began to materialize, Tucker said, when detectives began delving into Bowman's network of acquaintances and friends.

“We just started doing interviews and connecting one thing to another, and that led to the individuals,” he said. “It came together quicker than we thought it would.”

The investigation has moved quickly, with less than four days between the estimated time of the murder and the arrest. The suspect was arraigned on first-degree murder charges in a hearing.

Perfect for Framing, the sequel to Murder at Blue Falls, is available.

This novel is set in and around Boone, North Carolina, home of Appalachian State University.
